Having let Martin Dubravka head to Manchester United on loan, Newcastle United needed a new goalkeeper to sit behind Nick Pope.

That man, it seems, is Loris Karius, who most Premier League fans will remember from his time at Liverpool.

His spell with the Reds left a lot to be desired, where he basically became an outcast after a poor performance in a Champions League final, and he has since become a free agent after ending his contract at Anfield earlier this summer.

There was a feeling he might end up somewhere in the Bundesliga again, but it’s actually Newcastle who will welcome him, according to Sky Germany.

The news comes from their journalist Florian Plettenberg, who took to Twitter to announce the player is ‘on the verge’ of joining the Magpies and has already arrived at the club.

With Karl Darlow currently injured, he ‘should replace’ the 31-year-old, and ‘will pass his medical soon’.

Once that is done and all goes well, the 29-year-old former Liverpool is expected to sign a ‘short-term contract’.

How long isn’t said, but it could simply be for one-year, allowing Newcastle that safety in knowing they have someone else behind Pope, all the while looking for a long-term solution in the role of backup.
