Rachid Ghezzal is having a really disappointing time with Lyon and may wish he’d have left last summer. Everton made an offer of around €11m to Lyon, and the French club accepted, given Ghezzal only had 12 months remaining on his contract.
Ronald Koeman was clearly keen, with a wage package of €400k per month put forward. This would have seen Ghezzal earning around £350k at the current exchange rates, and was inflated due to the deflated transfer fee.
Ghezzal turned his nose up at the approach, but things haven’t gone as he’d have planned. In the Ghezzal family plan, 25 year old Rachid, advised by his brother, would now have the pick of some of the world’s biggest clubs, who’d be throwing huge contracts at him.
However, the reality is he’s been struggling to get into the Lyon team, and will struggle to find a club to match Everton’s offer.
L’Equipe say that whilst attractive clubs like Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, AS Monaco, and Everton have been interested, the player’s drop in form and status will ‘raise reservations’.
Someone will come forward, but Ghezzal won’t have the negotiating power he’d have hoped for.
