Unai Emery is sometimes perhaps more open than he should be about the market, telling the media in recent days that he’d quite like João Félix and Marco Asensio to be under his control at Aston Villa.
The second of those is set to come true unless there’s any unexpected barriers thrown in the way of a deal. Aston Villa had been working calmly to secure a loan for the former Real Madrid player, and Le Parisien report the Premier League club ‘stepped up a gear’ on Saturday afternoon to agree a deal with PSG.
Asensio had arrived at the Ligue 1 side as a free agent after his contract with Real Madrid expired in 2023. The Spaniard signed a contract with PSG until 2026 and Le Parisien report he’s set for a simple loan move to Aston Villa.
There’s no purchase option and no talk of a renewal in the Le Parisien report, which would mean at the end of the loan he’ll have just a year of contract left, and that could be a good negotiating position for Aston Villa should they want to buy him at that point.
Asensio is expected to travel to England today to go through the formalities.
