The front page of this week’s edition of SportBild shouts out there’s poker going on at Bayern Munich. Often, the German media refer to any type of negotiation as a poker battle, and this time it’s related to the Bundesliga side securing multiple players to new contracts.
One of the men involved is Leroy Sane.
Now 28-years-of-age, he moved from Manchester City to Bayern Munich in 2020. Sane’s contract expires at the end of the current season and he’s been linked with Newcastle United, albeit weakly, recently.
SportBild report the player is ‘surprised’ by those links, essentially because he feels he’s worth a higher level than Newcastle United.
According to the German magazine, signing for a club in the ‘category’ of the Magpies is simply ‘not an option’ for Sane.
He obviously believes he’s of the level of pretty much guaranteed Champions League football and a title battle every season.
Newcastle United finished last season seventh in the Premier League, and currently find themselves in ninth position.
A renewal offer is on the table, but at a lower salary to what Sane is paid now. Agreement is possible if additional bonuses present the chance of earning something approaching €20m a season.
