Nicolai Jorgensen hasn’t scored for Feyenoord since Christmas Eve, which is a rather long time for a striker the club valued at around €20m during the winter transfer window.

Newcastle United’s attempts to sign the player were very public, with Feyenoord making a lot of their strong stance and refusal to part with the 27 year old.

But he hasn’t scored since, and there’s a feeling from some in the Netherlands that Jorgensen hasn’t got his head right and his form has been damaged by the failed transfer to Newcastle United.

Former Dutch international, and outspoken pundit, Wim Kieft has had a blast at the player over the weekend. Dutch website Soccer News have picked up TV comments from Kieft on Jorgensen: “He is ultimately a pro with a current contract, it is disappointment, it may take some time, but it should continue as normal.”

Kieft thinks it’s “must simply be a mental issue” for the striker, and he’s struggling after wanting a move to Newcastle United.

But despite the claims, the Newcastle angle could be incorrect. Rafael Benitez’s men only came in for Jorgensen towards the end of January, and he didn’t score at all in that month.

On January 21st he put in a poor performance against Ajax and even picked up a red card, and if that happened now there’d be many in the Netherlands ready to say it had something to do with the failed Newcastle move.

In the Eredivisie, Jorgensen only scored once from August to November, so this kind of dry patch isn’t unusual for the player.
