Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer is yet to decide on his future after receiving ‘top offers’ in the summer, including from Manchester United.
BILD cover the goalkeeper’s future today, explaining that this evening’s clash for a place in the 3rd round of the DFB Cup could prove to be crucial in more ways than one.
Success, and presumably more in later rounds, could help determine the future of several players in the squad and Sommer is one of them.
He has ‘excelled for years’ at the German club but his current contract expires in the summer and at the moment, ‘all options are still conceivable’ for him.
While he could renew his deal, there is also a possibility he could leave in the January transfer window or on a free transfer next summer.
Manager Roland Virkus has been trying for months to get an extension signed but Sommer is ‘having a hard time deciding’ on his future after what happened this summer.
He already had ‘top offers’ from several clubs, including Manchester United, and admitted to BILD that he had to take them into serious consideration.
“It’s clear that you think about it intensively, also together with my wife. But of course, I also know what I have in Monchengladbach, the club has become like a family to me,” he told them.
What Sommer wants is one last ‘top contract’, a feel-good factor for him and his family and a positive sporting perspective that might even include a title.
That’s why this evening is important as progression would mean Sommer leaving for the World Cup in the knowledge that he can still ‘really pull something off’ with Monchengladbach afterwards.
Failure would signify otherwise and there is a belief that if he were to keep up his ‘outstanding performances’ in Qatar then the German side’s chances of getting him to sign a new deal would be significantly reduced.
For now, a new contract hasn’t been signed and he could be available on the cheap in January, or on a free next summer, both ideas we’re sure Manchester United will be keeping a close eye on after their interest in the summer.
