With Everton seemingly uninterested in signing Isco on a free transfer, there is another team in the Premier League who could still move for him, and that’s Wolverhampton Wanderers.
That’s because they are one of the few teams in England’s top-tier with a registration space in their squad for a free agent, which the Spaniard is since he left Sevilla almost two months ago.
There was a wide belief he could head to Merseyside, but that never happened, and that came after links sending him to Wolves.
That’s because of Julen Lopetegui, who took over at Molineux from Bruno Lage just before the World Cup, and has worked hard to turn matters around.
Wolves currently find themselves 15th in the Premier League after 22 games, a good four to five points above the relegation zone (depending on how Everton fare against Liverpool), but the work is far from over.
Estadio Deportivo look at Isco’s situation on Monday, and explain that had his ‘beloved’ Lopetegui stayed at Sevilla, he would probably be there with him and ‘in all probability would not have left’.
Right now, Isco is training at home, and some sources reportedly state that ‘he works so much that he looks in even better shape than he was at Sevilla’, but also that his current status is ‘starting to take a toll on him’.
Still, he and his wife are ‘resigned to staying in the Andalusian capital until at least next summer’, partly because of his children, but also because he has ‘come to terms that he will not find a team until next season’.
With few transfer windows still open, he is banking on a club suffering ‘some unexpected situation’, or a team like Wolves who have a space left in their squad to register a free transfer.
Perhaps a move to Molineux could still take place, but that will entirely depend on whether Lopetegui wants a reunion in the West Midlands or not.
