Sekou Mara is set to sign his contract with Southampton on Monday afternoon after passing his medical, reports French journalist Marc Mechenoua.
The same journalist reported on July 23rd that the Bordeaux striker was set to sign for the Saints, and would be given a five year contract. Southampton are expected to pay €11m plus a potential further €2m in bonus payments.
Given the financial struggles Bordeaux have been going through following their relegation from Ligue 1, it’s a big boost for the French club.
Mara had been linked with multiple Premier League clubs before Southampton finally took the plunge to sign him. Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Leeds United were all said to be keen, but it’s the Saints who have sealed the deal.
Last season, the 19-year-old played 26 matches in Ligue 1 for Bordeaux, finding the back of the net six times. He’s right-footed and can play anywhere across the front three, so will bring some further options for Ralph Hasenhüttl.
