Last summer, FC Twente sold Robin Pröpper to Rangers and strengthened their defence by signing Gustaf Lagerbielke on loan from Celtic. He decided to leave Celtic Park after being hardly utilised by Brendan Rodgers.

The Celtic man’s situation improved at Twente and he’s played 32 games this season. Three months ago, their technical advisor, Jan Streuer, talked about the desire to retain him.

Soccernews state the 25-year-old Sweden international would like to continue with them next season, however, Twente won’t retain him as they find Celtic’s request for €3.5m to be too high.

Another Twente centre-back, Mees Hilgers, has just over a year left on his contract. The report states he’s looking to move elsewhere. The Eredivisie side, for their part, could cash in from his sale in the summer window, to avoid losing him for free in 2026.

Hilgers and Lagerbielke’s situations would force Twente to look for a new centre-back.

Journalist Leon ten Voorde, who covers Twente, was asked whether the Rangers defender returning to his former club is ‘realistic’.

Responding to that, he said: “Yes, he also fits the profile that we need.”

Hilgers’ future needs to be resolved while Lagerbielke will return to Celtic after his loan spell. Pröpper, who played 43 games for Rangers, would replace the Celtic player if he were to return to Twente.

It’s unclear if Rangers are willing to let the 31-year-old leave in the summer window.
