Former Arsenal striker Lucas Perez has insisted the club were not wrong to splash out £18m on his signature back in 2016.

The striker arrived from Deportivo de La Coruña that summer, having impressed for the Spanish side, with 33 goals and 22 assists in 96 games overall.

His time at Arsenal would not prove to be a very happy one, though, as he found himself relegated to a substitute’s role at best.

That is reflected in his numbers for the club, with him managing just 21 appearances overall during his two years with the club.

His time at the Emirates is largely seen as a failure, an example of the kind of lavish and wasteful spending that has led to Arsenal’s problems in recent years.

That’s despite a record of seven goals and five assists in those 21 games, a number plenty of forwards would be more than happy with.

And it seems Perez is as well, with him insisting Arsenal were right to pay what they did, regardless of his spell being deemed a failure.

“I can tell you that I am proud that many clubs have paid for me,” he told La Voz de Galicia.

“And I will always be grateful to each of them who have put their trust in me.

“There is a lot of talk about Arsenal, but if Arsenal paid 21 million, it is because I played and grew up in other clubs.”
