Lille defender José Fonte has explained why he was spotted in the stands for this Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win over Everton this week.
Liverpool beat their fierce rivals 2-0 at Anfield on Monday, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo securing all three points and a vital win for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Lovren was spotted in the stands taking in the game, having seemingly made the trip over from France, where he currently plays for Lille.
That naturally led to some questions being asked, with the Portuguese defender not having a relationship with either club despite his years playing in England.
He spent 11 years in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham before moving to DL Yifang in 2018.
It was strange, then, to see him taking in a Merseyside derby at the beginning of the week but he has revealed that trip was instigated by his son, who is a big fan of Virgil van Dijk.
“I went with Lucas, my little one. He’d been asking me for a long time,” he told Le Petit Lillois.
“Liverpool is his favourite club. His favourite player is Van Dijk, not his father (laughs). It’s a special game, there’s always this special atmosphere, I had never been there as a fan.
“So it was also a great experience for me, I can watch a nice game, I could meet old friends and the evening went well.”
