Royston Drenthe has revealed how a ‘stranger’ essentially finalised his move to Everton as his agent wasn’t available at the time.
Soccer News have been speaking to the former winger today, in which he provided a surprising anecdote about his move to Everton in August 2011.
The Dutchman was a surprise signing for Toffees at the end of August that year, joining on a season long loan deal from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
He went on to make 27 appearances for Everton that season, scoring four goals and providing seven assists across the campaign.
In truth his time on Merseyside was best remembered for his antics off of the pitch, with Drenthe involved in several controversial occurrences behind the scenes that ultimate saw him fall foul of manager David Moyes.
The fact he ended up at Everton at all was a little surprising, with it not often the two clubs do business given their respective statuses in the world game.
And that was not the only surprising thing about the whole affair according to Drenthe, who now admits that his agent being unavailable left a stranger, at least to him, finalising his switch to Goodison Park.
“My then agent couldn’t be there at the time, so one of his right-hand men came to finalize the deal,” he said.
“He had to do that with me. So now I was there myself, and with a stranger. Practically speaking, I heard all the details, ins and outs that were probably not for my ears.
“It was a bit awkward. I now also heard the management fee, things like that. You could also see from his actions that he was not at ease because I also heard things that you were not supposed to hear as a footballer.
“Look, agents do their job too. But they are often things that are not for our ears. They act very transparent, but in most cases they are not. They were able to eat well from this transfer, yes, I am absolutely convinced of that!”
