Olympiakos defender Giulian Biancone has revealed his extra delight at beating Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League, as it allowed him to get one over on Emiliano Martínez for his friends in France.
Biancone has been speaking to the 90 Football podcast, relayed by TyC Sports, in which he laid into Martínez.
The Argentine goalkeeper is very much the Marmite footballer of the moment, with his antics on the pitch either loved or hated by many.
While he’s absolutely loved in Argentine thanks to his superb performances for his country and the two Copa America trophies and World Cup to go with them, many others are less enamoured by him.
That’s certainly the case in France, where the 32-year-old’s performance and antics at the World Cup final in Qatar still leave a very bitter taste in the mouth.
Biancone, like the rest of us, presumably watched the Aston Villa star from home as he again caused controversy in Argentina’s win nearly two years ago.
And so, when it came to taking on Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League semi-finals last year, a tie they eventually won 6-2 on aggregate before going on to win the tournament, he admitted it had an extra special feeling to beat Martínez.
“I find him very arrogant,” he said.
“What I didn’t like about Martínez’s behaviour was the lack of respect. The result made me happy because I made my French friends happy.”
