Earlier this summer we brought you one of the more surprising rumours in Asier Riesgo potentially joining Manchester City.
The 35-year-old Eibar goalkeeper had apparently been recommended by Manchester City goalkeeping coach Xabier Mancisidor, and then analysed by assistant manager Mikel Arteta, and was close to joining.
Indeed, Diario Vasco reported that it was close to being sewn up and City were glad to be adding some experience to the squad.
Eibar were happy to let Riesgo go and take a once in a lifetime opportunity, and the player, after initial concerns, was happy to make the move. In fact, City were said to be ‘accelerating’ the move.
Fast forward more than two weeks and Riesgo still isn’t a Manchester City player. The deal really should have been done by now, given there didn’t appear to be any roadblocks.
Mundo Deportivo covers the story today and it seems Eibar haven’t given up on keeping Riesgo after all.
The newspaper report the La Liga club have offered him a new deal and their manager, Fran Garagarza, does not consider his time at the club as over, telling the newspaper ‘the renewal offer still stands.’
That seems to suggest the move is not quite as final as it once seemed, although the ball is very much in the goalkeeper’s court.
He now has to make a decision on whether to stay with his current club, where he and his family are secure and he’s well-liked, or take the once in a lifetime opportunity to move to the Etihad.
It’s a tough one.
