Since it became clear Christian Eriksen’s move to Inter Milan had turned into a total disaster, he’s been linked with half the Premier League.

Clubs as lofty as Manchester United have been mentioned as destinations for the Denmark international, along with some lower down the table like West Ham and Aston Villa.

Tottenham, where Eriksen moved from just under a year ago, have been mentioned a few times but it’s never really felt like a realistic scenario. However, over the past couple of days, Gazzetta dello Sport have been insisting this is a possible outcome.

On Friday, they really go for it.

According to the Italian newspaper, Jose Mourinho ‘would accept’ the player’s return in the current window. Indeed, it’s even stated that Tottenham are the only club in town for Eriksen, with ‘no other suitors on the horizon’.

Gazzetta say Mourinho ‘winks’ at Eriksen, and a return to Spurs ‘becomes a market opportunity’.

Inter Milan are watching the situation and what intermediaries are working on. They’re cautious that clubs, including Tottenham, won’t want to match the player’s €7.5m, after tax, wages, presumably on a loan deal.

Spurs’ salary ceiling is said to be €5m, again presumably after tax. It’s not said, but there’s probably a worry at Inter that they’ll have to continue paying part of the player’s wages.

As for Christian Eriksen, he’s ‘ready to pack his bags’, however, there’s no clarity on his thoughts regarding a return to Tottenham.
