Earlier on Friday, Lee Ryder reported Jetro Willems could become a Newcastle United player soon, according to Dutch sources.
It was an interesting claim, because it came less than a day after Bild published an interview with the Eintracht Frankfurt player, in which he talked up a transfer and dragged Newcastle back into the equation.
Willems wants to leave Frankfurt because he isn’t getting enough games in his preferred position of fullback, and feels being used as a midfielder is causing harm to his Netherlands chances.
Bild quoted him as saying: “To reach my goal and play again in the national team, I have to play as a left back. As a midfielder I have no chance at all.”
On interest, he said: “AS Roma and Newcastle were once an issue, where it is right now, I don’t know. But I have one more month, I’m quite relaxed.”
He doesn’t have a month if he wants to move to England, he doesn’t even have a week.
Over in the Netherlands, AD.nl report that on Sunday evening, Willems confirmed Newcastle and Roma interest on TV to VTBL, so he’s pushing his own transfer rumour.
There are no Dutch updates on that, other than them covering what is being claimed in England today.
In Germany, Frankfurter Rundschau report the player is at his club’s training camp in Austria.
