As Barcelona continue to be hopeful of signing Cesar Azpilicueta from Chelsea at the end of the season, Spanish outlet Marca today explains the complex scenario the player is in.

The fullback’s contract with the Blues expires this summer, and that would make him free to sign for the Camp Nou side.

However, the problem is that reports state Chelsea can trigger an option to renew it for a year in case he makes 30 appearances in the season.

It turns out that, according to Marca, some sources say that was already used by Chelsea before the sanctions which stopped the club from renewing deals.

Still, Azpilicueta and his entourage do not know anything about it.

The player is said to be waiting for the club’s sale, expected to happen in April, to speak to the board and see his situation.

Now in case Chelsea do renew Azpilicueta’s deal, there’s still a chance he could leave easily.

That’s because he reportedly has a ‘promise’ from the Blues that in case he wants to move out of the Stamford Bridge, they’d ‘facilitate’ his departure.

That’s said to be regardless of his contract situation, so Barcelona, and even Real Madrid, are keeping an eye on the opportunity which may show up this summer.
