Jetro Willems’ hopes of securing a permanent move to Newcastle United were crushed after he suffered a serious injury at the start of this year.

The left-back arrived at St James’ Park on a season-long loan deal from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 and the Magpies had an option to buy.

His injury setback saw the Tyneside club cut short his loan stay in January and they allowed the 26-year-old to return to the German side.

Willems hasn’t featured for Eintracht Frankfurt this season and with a contract expiring at the end of this season, the Bundesliga side were hoping Steve Bruce’s side would make an attempt for him in January.

Last week, the Netherlands international’s agent, Sigi Lens, said a decision on his client’s future will be made before the end of the upcoming window and also stressed “there is a possibility” for the defender to join Newcastle.

According to RTL Nieuws, it is no secret the player has pleased the Premier League side.

There’s speculation suggesting Bruce’s side could try to sign Willems and he has now opened the door to return to Newcastle in the winter market.

“A wonderful club. In terms of history, stadium, Geordies, that accent is nice,” he told talk show Andy Niet te Vermeijde, as quoted by RTL Nieuws.

“I hope to be able to go to England. That suits me. The atmosphere in England is wonderful.”
