It seems that Pep Guardiola’s wish to bring Sergio Gomez from Barcelona to Manchester City has now become a lot harder to achieve.

According to Catalan newspaper Sport today, Borussia Dortmund have apparently won the race for the wonderkid, and are expected to pay his €3m release clause at any moment.

The signing comes out as a blow for any club who was interested in the youngster, including Manchester City, who the newspaper claims were ‘one step away’ from signing him a year ago.

The 17-year-old’s contract with Barça would actually expire at the end of the season, but Dortmund apparently didn’t want to take the risk of having to fight against other big clubs for his signing.

Gomez is expected to sign a contract at Borussia Dortmund which will run until 2022, and is clearly part of a long term plan from the German side. So if Guardiola still wants him, Manchester City better prepare their pockets now.
