Aston Villa’s victory over Burnley on New Year’s Day came at a cost as their first-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton suffered a serious injury and has been ruled out of action for the remainder of this season.

AC Milan’s Pepe Reina has emerged as a target for the Premier League side and on January 8th, we covered reports coming out of Italy and Spain saying the goalkeeper is close to making a switch to Villa Park.

It was also suggested the Serie A side will allow the former Liverpool man to join the Premier League side on a free transfer.

These claims have now been backed up Calciomercato and they further add the player and Milan have approved the transfer to the English side. He is now ‘one step away’ from Villa.

The report also provides information on the details of the contract as they state Dean Smith’s and Reina have reached an agreement for a six-month contract with an option of extending it by a year, if Villa avoid relegation.

Aston Villa have 21 points and are 17th in the table, one point ahead of 18th placed Bournemouth.
