With Nuno Tavares loaned by Arsenal to Olympique Marseille back at the start of the season, Gunners’ fans haven’t been hearing a lot about him, except when the French media comes up with a story about his potential stay at the Ligue 1 side.
However, it turns out that the Premier League club may be spending a little more money following the €8m deal to sign him from Benfica in the summer of 2021.
According to newspaper O Jogo, that deal between Arsenal and the Eagles included a clause which said a bonus of €1m would need to be paid in case Tavares gets called up by the national team.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will announce on Monday the squad which will face Bosnia and Iceland in the Euro qualifiers, and it’s believed that the left-back has a chance to have a place in that list.
So far, the youngster only has appearances for the youth ranks, and could be making his first team debut.
Tavares made 37 appearances for Marseille this season so far, and even scored six goals in his loan spell, but despite those statistics, the French side are very unlikely to keep him, as they have no clause, and his behaviour has often left a lot to be desired.
