Sergio Reguilón remains a prime candidate to leave Tottenham in January and escape the ‘descent into hell’ he’s endured at the club.

That’s according to El Debate, who add their opinion to the mix after reports earlier today that the defender needs to escape a nightmare at Tottenham.

They report that, four years on from his arrival at the club, Reguilón has very much ‘lost his smile’ and could be looking for a way out in the January transfer window.

The player who once dazzled in Real Madrid’s youth team and then shone in the first team under Santiago Solari in 2019 is now just a distant memory.

Instead, he finds himself in ‘complete ostracism’ at Tottenham and that is unlikely to change between now and the end of the season, when his contract expires.

Initial enthusiasm with him is now indifference and his time at the club has been nothing but an ‘obvious descent into hell’. Last season he enjoyed loan spells at Brentford and Manchester United but returned in the summer to once again not be counted upon by Ange Postecoglou.

His contract with Tottenham expires in the summer and won’t be renewed and ‘the most normal thing’ would be for him to join a team where he ‘feels like a footballer again’.

He could even request for his contract to be terminated early in January so he can find a team who will guarantee him minutes and bring his miserable experience in London to an end.

For now, though, the defender finds himself in ‘absolute confinement’, waiting for the start of the January transfer window when he can start to look to the future.

A return to Spain would not be ‘unreasonable’ for him, although it remains to be seen if any clubs are willing to offer that opportunity.
