Just yesterday, we’ve seen the Portuguese press confirming that Newcastle United had an offer for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes turned down.

The bid had already been reported by the end of January, and we’ve now seen a newspaper backing it up and claiming the Magpies had put €13m on the table.

The first time Newcastle’s attempt was reported, we pointed out Nunes is mostly a rotation player at Sporting, starting most matches on the bench than on the pitch.

However, things seem to be changing a lot, as he’s today highlighted by newspaper A Bola as the player of the week.

Matheus Nunes scored Sporting’s late winner against Benfica on Monday, and is getting huge praise for that.

A Bola points out that he’s been very important to the team, both on the eight times he was brought from the bench, as well as his seven games as a starter.

The Portuguese press had already claimed that the Lions think his price will go up between now and the end of the season, so that’s a sign for Newcastle that more should be needed to take him from Lisbon in the summer.
