Through no fault of his own, Olivier Ntcham ended up being the reason why André Villas-Boas resigned from his role at Marseille.
The manager was only made aware of the Celtic midfielder’s arrival through the press, and decided enough was enough, especially when he had previously told Pablo Longoria he didn’t want the former France U21 international in his team.
The deal was done regardless, with Ntcham arriving in Marseille on loan with a view to buy at around €6m.
Despite the drama surrounding his deal, L’Equipe on Wednesday explain the Celtic loanee didn’t take Villas-Boas’ resignation personally, ‘aware that the problems at the club went beyond him’.
In fact, the former Manchester City player ‘remains vengeful and motivated to give everything to Marseille in the coming months’.
However, there’s little chance of him featuring in the next game, as ‘his physical condition might not be enough’, having played just 19 minutes of football in the league and 23 in the Europa League since the start of December.
