It’s fair to say that things haven’t been going well for Federico Fernández since his decision to leave Newcastle United in the summer.
He departed St James Park for Elche on a free transfer in the summer window, bringing an end to a four-year spell with the Magpies following a move from Swansea in 2018.
He made 89 appearances for Newcastle in that period, featuring regularly despite niggling issues regularly seeing him out of action for short spells over the years.
The defender would have been hoping for more regular playing time in Spain following his move but that has not been the case, with him only making his debut this past weekend.
That saw his side beaten by Rayo Vallecano, with a 95th minute Unai Lopez strike condemning them to a sixth loss of the season.
The Spanish side sit bottom of La Liga after seven games, the only side in the division without a win to their name so far.
This defeat was their fifth in a row and has left the club worried about how the season will pan out in their centenary year.
It’s a less than dream scenario for the former Newcastle defender, although he insists, they will keep on “fighting”.
“We left our lives to score, but we fought and lost,” Marca report him saying.
“We planned the game to come out on the counter, against an opponent that handles a lot of the ball. We need to improve with the ball,” he added, before admitting that it’s been a “difficult start” and that they will continue to “fight” regardless.
