With Tottenham going after Clément Lenglet, it was clear that Antonio Conte wanted some quality in depth at the heart of his defence.
Whether the Frenchman was his first choice, however, is a question only a few will know the answer to, especially when it was clear Spurs were interested in Gleison Bremer.
The Brazilian defender has been pushed towards Inter for a while now, and most thought the deal would be done by now, but there have been delays, which gave Tottenham a chance to try their luck.
A report from the end of June suggested the London side would soon present an offer for the centre-back, but it appears he wasn’t interested in moving to the Premier League either way.
That’s what Corriere dello Sport suggest on Thursday when looking at where the Bremer situation stands, as Torino’s president, Urbano Cairo is ‘trying to maximise the figure’ he gets for his star.
The problem he faces is that the player ‘wants Inter at all costs’ and he ‘even made it clear to Tottenham’, who are said to have ‘tried an approach’.
Therefore, Cairo ‘will have to give up at some point’ and grant Bremer the move he wants, especially if he is just going to turn down any other club.
As for Inter, they have offered somewhere around €28-30m for the player, while Torino want ‘over €40m’, meaning there is still work to be done.
Either way, Tottenham appear out of the equation, having since fallen back on Lenglet, whose loan from Barcelona should right around the corner.
