Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer has revealed joining Tottenham was an ‘absolute dream come true’ for him.

Wimmer currently finds himself playing for Rapid Vienna in his native Austria, having moved there on a free transfer from Stoke City in July 2021.

That move brought an end to a six year stay in England, where he had initially rocked up at Tottenham in a £5.4m deal from FC Koln as part of a summer rebuild at White Hart Lane.

Unlike fellow summer signings Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld, though, he would only spend two years with Tottenham, making 31 appearances in all competitions for the club before being moved on to the Potteries.

His time at the club was not a particularly successful one, with just ten appearances in the Premier League in his first season and five the following year.

The move is very much one that can go on the list of failed Tottenham transfers but for Wimmer, that is certainly not the case.

“The transfer was an absolute dream come true for me,” he told Transfermarkt.

“Of course, I wasn’t that naive and thought I would immediately become a regular player at Tottenham.

“But I didn’t want to be reproached for letting such an incredible opportunity pass. Tottenham were a different league to FC Koln.

“Suddenly you were sitting in the dressing room next to real superstars who you normally only know from the PlayStation. At every training session I just thought: Wow, how strong they are.”
