Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen’s future at the Camp Nou was uncertain in the summer transfer window as there were talks about rumoured interest from clubs across Europe.
No deal materialised and he’s continued with the La Liga winners, where he is the second choice keeper behind Marc-André ter Stegen.
Saturday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo claims Ernesto Valverde’s side were open to the idea of the Dutchman’s sale and if he had left, PSV Eindhoven’s Jeroen Zoet would have been the first choice player to replace his compatriot at the club.
The Catalan newspaper also mentions there was interest from the Premier League in the Eredivisie shot stopper, who was aware that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ‘wanted’ him following Joe Hart’s permanent switch to Burnley.
Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, neither Barcelona, nor the English champions made an approach for his services when he had just 12 months left on his contract, and Zoet has now signed a two-year extension with Mark van Bommel’s side.
Manchester City interest doesn’t make a great deal of sense, even with Claudio Bravo’s injury. As for the player, the only reason he’d consider leaving Barca is to be first choice elsewhere, so a move to City’s bench would have been an odd step.
