Leander Dendoncker struggled for regular game time at Aston Villa ever since Unai Emery arrived at Villa Park in November 2022.

The midfielder failed to impress while on loan at Napoli in the second half of last season. Aston Villa have allowed him to join Anderlecht on another temporary deal earlier this month.

This let the Aston Villa owned player return to his former club, who have an option to buy him.

As well as the 29-year-old, the Jupiler Pro League side also brought Dennis Praet back to the club in the last window. The latter had been without a club since leaving Leicester City as a free agent at the end of June.

Former Anderlecht manager Johan Boskamp isn’t convinced with these two deals. During a chat with Monday’s edition of Het Belang van Limburg, the 75-year-old insisted that the Aston Villa man and Praet won’t be able to make a difference at the Belgian club.

“Well, I don’t think so. At least not when I watch their last season. Leander was at a dead end at Aston Villa and Dennis barely came off the bench at Leicester even in the Championship. Their careers have been going downhill for a while,” he said.

At the same time, Boskamp remains hopeful Dendoncker and his compatriot can turn things around at Anderlecht. He claims the duo needed a fresh start this season.

“Hopefully they can turn that around here. I don’t believe in a return to De Rode Duivels [Belgium national team]. Tedesco is building a new team. I don’t see him going back to guys from the previous generation. The only one who will return is Lukaku,” Boskamp explained.
