Martin Braithwaite has played three matches for Leganes since joining the club from Middlesbrough at the start of the winter market, and he’s certainly not going to forget his January so far.
A debut at the Bernabeu resulted in a disappointing 3-0 loss, and then there was a victory over Huesca. But it was Wednesday which will really live in the memory for the Middlesbrough owned player, scoring the only goal of the game as Leganes beat Real Madrid 1-0 at home.
It was the second leg of the Copa del Rey tie and whilst the impact on the score over the two legs didn’t really mean anything, that likely won’t be mentioned when the Dane is telling his grandkids about that time he beat Real Madrid.
Braithwaite is enjoying himself thoroughly, and this weekend Spanish newspaper AS published an interview with the player, in which he explained he’d been studying La Liga to help himself settle in well.
He loves the football and the lifestyle, so AS asked if he’s going to make his loan move from Middlesbrough a permanent one in the summer.
Braithwaite sat on the fence, and replied: “It is something that does not depend on me. I came here to play football and that’s what I will do.”
That led to AS pushing a bit more, asking if he’d like to continue, and he dropped the hint he very much would: “What I can tell you is that I am very happy to be here. I’m enjoying it a lot.”
