Manchester City agreed a deal with River Plate for Julián Álvarez last January and loaned him back to them until the end of the 2021/22 season.

The striker arrived at the Etihad last summer and managed 10 goals and two assists from 30 matches this season, which includes 13 starts.

Pep Guardiola has preferred Erling Haaland, who also arrived last summer, ahead of the 23-year-old to lead Manchester City’s attack.

The Argentina international has a contract until 2027 and claims last month indicated the Premier League winners intend to offer him an improved deal.

Álvarez doesn’t seem to be happy with the limited role, according to Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo. He took to Twitter to state the World Cup winner has ‘not yet agreed to renew’ his contract at Manchester City.

If the 23-year-old doesn’t have a major role at the Etihad, he would seek a loan move in the summer. Merlo states Barcelona and a few other clubs have probed the South American’s situation.

In another tweet, the journalist explains Manchester City ‘want to improve’ Álvarez’s deal after he impressed at the World Cup. The parties have been negotiating for some time but are yet to reach an agreement.
