Atlético Madrid were interested in signing Marcos Alonso in 2018, just months before he signed a new deal at Chelsea in October of that year.
According to COPE, Diego Simeone’s side have once again identified the 28-year-old as a target and are ‘trying’ to secure his services in the winter market.
The report states the La Liga side were close to sealing the deal for the defender in 2018, but the Blues’ €40m demand forced the Madrid club to think again.
This time around, Atlético have a plan to sign the left-back and that’s to use the formula they used for Álvaro Morata in January 2019; a loan deal with a purchase option.
The defender’s first team appearances have been restricted in this calendar year due to the emergence of Emerson Palmieri. He has made only five starts in the league and that came when Emerson was ruled out with an injury.
With Frank Lampard no longer relying on Alonso, COPE adds the player would have already given his ‘OK’ to leave Stamford Bridge for the Spanish side.
Renan Lodi is the only recognised left-back at Atlético and Alonson arrival would further strengthen that position.
