Portuguese striker Henrique Araujo will depart Watford this summer and return to Benfica, where he will be given his chance to impress.

That’s according to Jornal de Noticias, who say the forward’s poor season at Vicarage Road hasn’t changed Benfica’s thinking on him.

Araujo joined Watford on loan in the January transfer window but has only managed eight appearances in the Championship since then, bagging one assist.

The current deal does not include an option to turn the move into a permanent one and JN say Araujo will be returning to Portugal at the end of the season.

They explain that he will return to Benfica from Watford in the summer and be given ‘a new opportunity’ to show himself to manager Roger Schmidt.

He’s set to join the pre-season training camp and Benfica plan to take another look at him as he was once highly rated by those in charge at the Portuguese club.

He was one of the highlights of the beginning of the season but ended up losing out to Gonçalo Ramos, who has gone from strength to strength and is now an established first-team star.

Now the plan is to take another look at him ahead of next season, with his disappointing spell at Watford seemingly playing no factor in the matter.
