Back in the 2019/20 season, when Marcos Rojo was having his final year at Manchester United, he could barely play for the Red Devils. The defender was only able to make nine appearances between September and January, and ended up agreeing his return to Argentina.
Most games missed by the player at the time were due to injuries, which followed him for all the years he spent at Old Trafford. Then with his loan spell Estudiantes and then a permanent move to Boca Juniors, the problems continued.
So as Rojo spoke to the Argentine media today, he revealed that he’s actually been getting psychological support. The 32-year-old is having a hard time whilst sidelined, and besides working on the recovery of his body, he wants to get his mind straight as well.
“Yes, it’s been a year and a little since I’ve been working with a sports psychologist. Before the games we have talks, to focus our heads on what’s to come,” Rojo told TyC Sports (via Olé).
“More than anything, I started because of the injuries. I felt that I was making an effort to recover, everything the doctors told me and when I returned to the pitch I got injured and injured. I couldn’t find a way around it. And I began to lose confidence in myself, in my body. But little by little I was improving and the injuries began to be less frequent and I began to feel better.”
He recalled that the problems started bothering him after the World Cup in 2018.
“Since then, it was one injury after another. I couldn’t get out. You start to distrust yourself. You say: ‘I’m going to do this sprint and I’m going to get injured’. I was sinking a bit. You start to get depressed, to feel bad at home, with your family. You don’t realise it, but your head is working. And since I’m with this lad, I started to feel better, he helped me a lot.”
Marcos Rojo played for Manchester United between 2014 and 2020, making 122 appearances for the Red Devils.
Between his return from Estudiantes and his move to Boca Juniors, he even stayed for six more months at Old Trafford in 2020, but wasn’t used by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
