Portuguese newspapers normally spend the day checking transfer rumours on the internet, so when they find something, they see if they can get something extra on the story, and publish it in the paper edition the next day.

That’s what Record does today with the Independent’s story which said Benfica and Frankfurt are both fighting for Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo.

Running out of contract with the London side next summer, the player will soon be free to sign a pre-contract with another club, and would be keen on moving abroad, according to the report.

Record tried to find out something else, and could only confirm that Benfica’s interest actually comes from a few months back.

The newspaper says that Aribo’s arrival in Lisbon was ‘on the table’ in the last summer window, and at the time the plan would be to buy and loan him out to some other club.

All the rest of Record’s article is based on the Independent’s story. So all they could say is that Aribo has been a possibility for the Eagles recently, which makes the English report sound about right as well.
