Ajax’s Jordan Henderson has played down reports linking him with a move to Sunderland in January.
At the weekend, the 34-year-old started in his side’s 3-0 win over Almere City FC. After the tie, he had a chat with ESPN NL and his comments are relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
The midfielder has addressed reports of Sunderland’s interest, which have have never really gone away.
On October 18th, Henderson said he hasn’t yet made a decision on his long-term future.
A few days later, the Eredivisie side’s technical director, Alex Kroes, ruled out his exit amid claims of Sunderland links. Later that month, Ajax manager Francesco Farioli also talked about wanting to keep the Englishman.
Henderson, who was born in Sunderland, spent 13 years with the Black Cats of which the last five were with their first team. He left the Championship side for Liverpool in 2011.
The Ajax player didn’t hold back when expressing his love for Sunderland, while he has also made it clear that there’s been no approach from Régis Le Bris’ side so far.
“It’s my club, ever since I was a boy of six or seven years old. Then I was in the stands,” he said.
“But I just hope I stay here [at Ajax]. I really like it here. I want to help the club to grow further. We are also taking those steps.
“But I also read it. I don’t even know where all this comes from, because there has been no contact.”
Henderson has a deal lasting until 2026 and has made 25 appearances for Ajax this season.
