Alberto Moreno spent five seasons at Liverpool before leaving the Reds as a free agent at the end of last season.

The Spaniard struggled for regular football during his time with the Merseyside club. Jürgen Klopp’s side tried to cash in from Moreno’s sale in the past, but they were unsuccessful.

One such attempt was in January 2017 and the Premier League club’s idea was to replace Moreno with Riza Durmisi, who had joined Real Betis from Brøndby in the summer of 2016.

The Denmark international revealed he had an official offer from the English club, but the latter’s failure to offload Moreno meant Durmisi couldn’t join Liverpool.

“It is my dream to become one of the best fullbacks in the world, and I believe that,” Durmisi was quoted as saying by Tipsbladet.

“Then there are many others who can laugh, but after my first year in Betis you could see that something was happening. I had an official offer from Liverpool.

“Moreno chose to stay. They had to get rid of him before it could happen, and that’s what I was waiting for.

“When you have as good a contract as Moreno had in Liverpool, he would stay, and I could understand that, but that he had to leave was something that had to happen before I could get there.”

Liverpool’s failure to sign Durmisi in January 2017 saw them take Andrew Robertson from Hull City later that year.

Durmisi left Betis for Lazio in 2018 and the Serie A side allowed him to join Nice on loan in January.
