Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret is ‘desired’ by Tottenham as they seek out a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

That’s according to La Repubblica, relayed by Calcio Napoli 24, who say Spurs will have to work hard to convince the player into the move.

Lloris has been enduring something of a difficult campaign for Tottenham, with several high profile mistakes, particularly after returning from the World Cup with France.

Questions are now being raised about how much longer he can remain as Tottenham number one, particularly given he turned 36 on Boxing Day.

That means he is very much in the twilight of his career and Tottenham are known to be scouring the market for his long-term replacement at the club.

Repubblica say that they have identified Meret as an option to look at as he has impressed as Napoli’s number one this season.

Those performances have made him ‘desired’ by those in charge at Spurs but they would face a fight to convince the goalkeeper into the move.

That’s because he has ‘already made his decision on his future’. His plan is to win the Serie A title with Napoli and then sign a longer contract extension, perhaps until 2028.

Indeed the current idea is to do that at the end of the season.

That should put an end to any potential transfer to Tottenham, with the feeling very much that Meret isn’t interested in the move even if it is offered.
