Eric Garcia was again on the front page of a Catalan sport newspaper on Monday. The Manchester City defender took the cover of Mundo Deportivo, who insisted Barcelona want to sign him.

They believe Gerard Pique is coming to the end of his career, and the worries over Samuel Umtiti’s fitness are constant. Garcia is thought to be a good option for Barca partly because of his contract situation.

With less than a year left on his deal, Barca would look for a cheap deal this summer or to convince Garcia not to sign a renewal and then commit to a pre-contract agreement in January.

Should the latter option be what happens, Barcelona would get the agreement done and then offer Manchester City a token payment for a winter sale.

Mundo Deportivo now explain the lengthy list of reasons Garcia has been identified. Apart from the expiring contract, it’s stated the 19 year old has gone through ‘exponential growth’ under Pep Guardiola.

He’s continued learning the role of a defender in a Barca style, so wouldn’t have too many problems settling back in.

There’s no certainty yet over what Garcia will decide. Ultimately, given his contract situation, the decision will be ‘up to the player’, and he sees benefits at both clubs.
