Bruno Fernandes somehow remains a Sporting player.
The attacking midfielder was much linked with a move ahead of the summer window, and with good cause. Managing 32 league goals and 18 assists, the 24 year old looked prime for a big transfer.
Manchester United were continually linked, but never appeared to make the big concrete effort expected, however, Tottenham Hotspur did. They sent representatives to Lisbon to push for the signing, with it likely Bruno was an alternative to Giovani Lo Celso.
No deal was found, and it’s was near certain that Sporting wouldn’t give Tottenham the kind of deal which Real Betis finally agreed to.
Now Bruno has spoken to Portugal’s edition of GQ and confirmed the Spurs effort, also making it clear he has a big desire to play in the Premier League.
Record have picked up the comments, and the Sporting player is quoted as saying: “I directly didn’t have a deal with Tottenham. There were conditions for the agreement to be made. But Sporting understood that the value was not enough and I have to respect their decision. The deal did not happen because Sporting didn’t consider that the values offered by Tottenham were enough to set me free, eventually rejecting the offer.”
Bruno insists there’s no regret at the failure to move, and he understands the position of his club: “Any player has to be motivated to stay in a club like Sporting. Apart from having the dream of playing in England, this does not prevent me from continuing in Sporting, because the club made the decision not to sell me, also because I believed in my value and believe that the values offered were not enough. I have to be flattered that Sporting did not accept values that were, for them, so low. I have to be proud.”
Whilst the Premier League window is now shut, others around Europe remain open, and the midfielder hasn’t ruled out a move elsewhere: “Not only do I have a dream of playing in England, there are other countries where I dream of playing. I don’t try to go through my career with every possible club but with clubs where I feel my dreams will come true.”
Bruno Fernandes has played three league games so far this season, scoring once and adding four assists.
