Ronald Araújo has rejected Chelsea in favour of extending his stay at Barcelona.

That’s according to Sport, who state the Blues were one of the clubs who failed to take him away from the Camp Nou last year.

The defender last signed an extension in April 2022, and prior to that, Chelsea made attempts to secure his services. In fact, the report states the west London club ‘covered him with money’.

It’s said the 24-year-old ordered those around him to ignore offers, and ‘closed the door’ on Chelsea and other clubs that tried signing him.

The Uruguay international ‘gave up a lot of money’ proposed by the Premier League side, to fulfil his wish to continue at the Catalan club. He also made a considerable effort to sign an extension, in order to fit into Barcelona’s wage bill.

Araújo’s decision to snub Chelsea and others has paid off as Sport say he’s now become one of the ‘most reliable defenders’ at Barca.

Xavi Hernández’s side are aware the South American must be rewarded with a new deal and the newspaper states they will initiate talks with him for an extension.
