Deciding to leave Southampton to go to Aston Villa, Jan Bednarek hasn’t quite got the game time he wanted so far.
The Poland international only boasts four appearances in the Premier League to date, as well as an extra 90 minutes in the EFL Cup.
Perhaps the arrival of Unai Emery, who will replace the recently sacked Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, will help the 26-year-old, but it’s clear things haven’t gone to plan just yet, especially when he could have signed for West Ham United.
In fact, the belief in Poland, namely from Kamil Kosowski for Przeglad Sportowy, is that Bednarek simply ‘made a wrong choice and now he has problems’.
This all comes as part of an article looking at the players who will head to the World Cup, and the journalist reminds his readers that as well as Aston Villa, the centre-back ‘had another option’, because West Ham ‘were also trying to sign him’.
The decision to head to the Midlands ‘can be described as poor’, and the belief is that ‘if he had chosen the Hammers offer, his chances of playing would be much better’.
One of the reasons is that West Ham play in Europe, meaning that David Moyes ‘needs a large squad’ to rotate, which Bednarek could have benefitted from.
Because of this lack of minutes, Kosowski believes that ‘it may not be possible to prepare for the starting line-up in the World Cup’, and the Aston Villa man might have to make do with a spot on the bench.
