On Thursday, Elche CF confirmed they’d completed the signing of Bambo Diaby from Sheffield Wednesday.
There’s excitement around the second division Spanish club over his arrival. Friday’s edition of Diario Información covers it and gives their take on Elche’s decision to take him away from the Owls.
The 26-year-old joined Sheffield Wednesday in August 2023 and made 35 appearances in his debut season. Last week, he featured in their EFL Cup win over Hull City.
It’s claimed the Senegal international will not occupy a non-EU player slot because he has a Spanish passport.
The Segunda División side started negotiations, likely with Sheffield Wednesday, a long time ago. The defender had interest from other Spanish clubs, but Elche sporting director Christian Bragarnik decided to ‘dig deep’ to secure his services.
Diaby will train with his new teammates today and will have another session tomorrow. He’ll have to quickly understand manager Eder Sarabia’s methods, to be ready to face Albacete on Sunday.
Sarabia currently has limited options in the centre-back position, and this could force him to start Diaby.
The report says Elche ‘want to make the definitive leap in Spanish football’ with Diaby. He ‘arrived motivated’ and there’s clearly big excitement with his arrival at the club.
