Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham and other clubs have tried to sign Jason Denayer in the summer and even outside the transfer window.
The defender is currently without a club since leaving Lyon as a free agent.
Fulham wanted him in the last window, while Wolves have made contact to take him to Molineux this month.
On September 13th, Het Nieuwsblad reported the defender is in contact with Bruno Lage’s side, but a move remains difficult due to his attitude towards a new club.
The Belgium international’s failure to find a new club so far has left the media, at least in his own country, puzzled. De Morgen take a look at his ‘bizarre’ situation and why he’s refused a few clubs so far.
It’s claimed the centre-back’s stubbornness drove him away from Lyon. The same issue has stopped him finding a new club.
Denayer didn’t entertain multiple sides because he was waiting for a top club, which will give him opportunities to win trophies. That never happened and the more offers he ignores, the fewer options he is now left with.
The newspaper states: ‘Denayer’s reputation has also taken a dent in the meantime. It’s like a fresh load of fish at the Friday market. You get the highest amount for it in the morning. But too long in the sun and it starts to smell. Bad for demand and price.’
His current situation has not stopped Roberto Martínez from including the 27-year-old in the Belgium squad for September’s international’s break.
Both the player and Martínez are represented by the same agency. This led to suggestions the former Everton boss is helping Denayer find a new club, but it has been dismissed by the agency, the Belgian football association, and the defender himself.
Either way, Denayer needs to play, and it won’t be long before he finds a new club. With claims of Wolves, Fulham and others showing interest, it needs to be seen where the Belgian will end up.
