RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano has emerged as a target for Barcelona.

Sport’s online edition came up with these claims late on Thursday and they state the centre-back is the ‘ultimate objective’ of the La Liga winners in the winter market. The Blaugrana view him as a ‘bet for the future’.

The newspaper explains his performances for the Bundesliga side and for France U20s haven’t gone unnoticed and he’s caught the attention of other clubs.

Apart from Barca, Arsenal are also interested in the defender. Mikel Arteta’s side intend to acquire the player’s services and therefore, they will have to fight with the Gunners for Upamecano’s signature.

For either of the two clubs to sign the Frenchman, they will have to spend €53m this month. Upamecano’s contract with Leipzig runs until 2021.

Barca’s purpose of the possible signing of Upamecano is to make sure they have a replacement for his compatriot, Samuel Umtiti, who could be soon pushed out of the club.

There’s no mention of Upamecano in the print edition of the same newspaper, and there’s a chance this is all motivated by Umtiti’s poor performance in Barca’s 3-2 loss to Atletico Madrid on Thursday.
