West Ham were repeatedly linked with Nahitan Nandez during the summer transfer window.
The player wanted to leave Cagliari and was frustrated with the club’s valuation of him. He skipped a flight for a pre-season game and everything got a little unsavoury before it became clear he wouldn’t be going anywhere.
Still with the Sardinia club, the 25-year-old has made 15 Serie A appearances so far this season, contributing two assists. Like last season he’s been playing in a variety of midfield roles, and the transfer rumours have inevitably returned.
Vincenzo Morabito, one of the better known talking heads in Italian football, has been quoted by CalcioNapoli24 as saying: “Nandez can leave in January, but Cagliari, with their ranking, do not deprive themselves of one of their most important players on loan, at least they take an obligation.
“West Ham were very close to catching him, then they made a mistake by taking Valsic, who is not doing well.”
Nikola Vlasic has only played 126 Premier League minutes since signing for David Moyes side. On top of that he’s picked up nearly 400 minutes in the Europa League, but it’s fair to say he’s not yet had the impact expected.
It remains to be seen whether West Ham return to look at a Nandez deal in January.
Cagliari are in the relegation zone, which will impact all their decisions.
