Thiago Alcantara’s future remains very uncertain, and his comments whilst away with Spain have caused confusion in the German media.
Over a month ago, Bayern Munich told their local media that Thiago had decided to leave the club, rejecting a renewal offer which had been close to agreement. With less than a year left on his current deal, the Bundesliga champions knew they needed to sell to avoid losing the player on a free transfer.
Liverpool were linked almost immediately, yet, at first, their interest was denied by media close to the Reds. That stance changed, but it still doesn’t feel like a move is imminent.
Thiago last week insisted he hasn’t said he’s leaving Bayern. That provoked a strong response from Bild, who published an article asking why the Spaniard was lying. Reading between the lines, it was possible to believe Thiago had simply told Bayern he wasn’t renewing, and then the effort to sell him came from the club.
The German newspaper state Thiago is ‘already in agreement with Liverpool’ over a move to Anfield, yet the stalemate remains. Bayern want €30m, and Jurgen Klopp’s side understandably don’t want to pay it.
Pressure is all on Bayern, and with there seemingly no competition right now, despite previous efforts to drag Manchester United into the story, Liverpool are well placed to get that €30m figure down should their interest be genuine.
Bild suggest Thiago may never actually return to Munich, and that a transfer is close.
