Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont was close to joining Watford this month, before a deal was eventually blocked.

That’s according to Ouest France, who report that Lafont ‘almost joined’ the Hornets and is still looking for an exit on deadline day.

The newspaper reports that Lafont has been searching for a new club throughout this month and Watford were one sides to express an interest in him. In fact, they formulated a loan offer until the end of the season.

However, Nantes ‘did not follow up’ on the option because they felt the deal didn’t suit them. In particular, they felt Watford offered to cover an ‘insufficient’ amount of the 26-year-old’s salary.

That brought an end to negotiations for the goalkeeper and Watford instead went on to sign Egil Selvik from Udinese.

That means a move to Vicarage Road won’t be happening for Lafont, who instead will be spending deadline day looking for alternative offers. There is also the possibility of a move to somewhere like Türkiye, where the transfer window closes later.

Either way, Watford are out of the mix having been turned down by Nantes, seemingly for not offering to cover enough of the goalkeeper’s wages.
