Premier League champions Manchester City ‘almost’ signed the Sporting starlet Rafael Leão this summer, according to claims from Portugal today.
Newspaper Jornal de Notícias brings a story saying the player is now close on returning to the Lions, after rescinding his contract at the end of the season.
The negotiations are very advanced, as Sporting try to block Benfica from stealing their young talent. The Eagles offered the player a signing prize of €4m, but he’s not keen on creating any trouble by joining rivals.
Regarding Manchester City, Jornal de Notícias claims that Leão was almost joining them, but the deal collapsed when the new board at Sporting took charge.
Manchester City’s interest in Leão has been reported for months now, and in June, already as a free agent, the player was said to have an offer to join Pep Guardiola’s side, but apparently turned it down.
Now in case Sporting get him to return to the club, this will be one more great achievement from the club’s current board, which is doing everything to fix the mistakes made by the former president.
