Villarreal’s Mario Gaspar has terminated his contract with the club and will instead join Watford.
That’s according to AS, who say the defender has ‘accepted the challenge’ of signing for the Championship side.
They explain that Watford’s Kiko Femenía is set to arrive in Spain at some point in the coming days to finalise a move to Villarreal.
That’s been made possible by Gaspar’s departure from the club, as his contract being terminated ‘opens the door’ for Femenía.
The two deals are being done completely separately but, in effect, will be a swap deal between the two players.
Gaspar will join Watford on a free transfer and sign a two-year deal at Vicarage Road, while Femenía is expected to join Villarreal on Monday. The Spanish side will pay a fee of around €1m for him.
Gaspar’s move to Watford has come about as a result of Unai Emery’s lack of confidence in the player, which has forced him out of the club and to Vicarage Road.
Femenía, meanwhile, has been keen to return to Spain, and that has proven key in Villarreal making a move to secure his signature.
